James Poniewozik over at Time's Tuned In has taken a pot shot of sorts at How I Met Your Mother, which we all know to be the best show on TV. While he seems to enjoy the show, "which lulls you into familiarity with its five-friends-hangin'-in-a-bar setting, then throws curveballs that break with three-camera sitcom form out of nowhere," he takes issue the the "common cultural referents" that seem about 10 years too old for the 20-Something cast.
Having just spent the better part of a week quoting Aspen Extreme, ("That's how we do it ahhshole") a movie that came out when I was 12, I will defend How I Met Your Mother and say that while CBS may in fact be trying to woo an older demographic "desperately wanting to cling to their youth" there is a substantial sub-set of us 20-Somethings that get (almost) every 80's joke laced throughout the show. Yes, I even got the "Let's Go To the Mall" 80's knock off video, as I attended a Debbie Gibson AND a Tiffany concert before I turned 10. (I can't BELIEVE I just put that on the Internet).
Pop culture discrepancies aside, the show is Legen - wait for it - dary.
tiffany? come on pablo.
one of my "struggling actor" friends had a small bit part in last night's (1/8) episode. he was the depressed guy walking through and disturbing the scene at the empire state building.

Barney's antics make me laugh every time! He is also one of the reasons I loved watching the show. Sometimes, I thought that being exposed to the show unconsciously made me want to SUIT UP and be awesome instead!
