I had never heard of the group before, and went at the behest of a friend who knows someone in the band. After perusing their MySpace page - slash - listening to their music compulsively for 48 hours, I was ready for the show.
They're a pretty legit group - if you want to check out a few of their tunes I recommend Powerstripe, Other Girls and Are You Sensation (all available for your listening pleasure on their MySpace page). A Rolling Stone review states, "With echoes of the Bee Gees, Prince and Roxy Music, Tigercity's funky, electro-driven indie-pop was born of a desire to avoid what Gillim calls the 'scratchy post-punk guitar sound' New York bands have been milking for the past few years. The group's earliest tracks relied heavily on synthesizers and computerized beats, but their move to New York brought the addition of drummer Aynsley Powell and guitarist Andrew Brady, and with them a progressively refined combination of New Wave's mechanized sheen and funk's organic grooves." I don't actually know what any of that means, but trust me you'll like their music.
The only thing that marred this concert going experience were the two drunk dudes next to me who kept yelling "TIGER PENIS!" over and over. It was not really even marginally funny the first time, and by the 15th time it was getting uncomfortable for all of us. (My friend and I tried to come up with other nonsensical phrases to insert penis into - we came up with "penis butter" and "South Penis Island" before we lost interest.)
Tiger City will be at SXSW on Wednesday if any of you Interactives are hanging around.
